Thorne Vitamin B12 Methylcobalamin provides 1 mg (1000 µg) of vitamin B12 in the active methylcobalamin form per capsule. Methylcobalamin is one of two active coenzyme forms of vitamin B12 found in the body (the other being adenosylcobalamin), and serves as a cofactor in methionine synthesis and in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine.
Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to normal psychological function, to normal red blood cell formation, to the normal function of the immune system, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin B12 has a role in the process of cell division.
Vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal-based foods such as fish, meat, shellfish, eggs, liver, milk, and cheese. For vegans and strict vegetarians, supplementation with vitamin B12 or sufficient amounts of fortified foods is important.
